The Collection has one of the most outstanding groups of Islamic
coins in private hands, with over 8,000 examples in gold, silver
and copper. Many series are represented in larger numbers and greater
variety than in any other collection. The coins span the Islamic
world from North Africa to Central Asia and India and date from
the Umayyad period to the 20th century. Thus, the two-volume catalogue
will constitute an indispensable reference work for both scholars
and students of Islamic numismatics.
Among the most spectacular and important holdings are the earliest
Arab-Latin gold coins from North Africa. The standard corpus of
this series of Islamic coins with Latin inscriptions includes only
three examples of the first two years' issues (AD 704-05), but the
Khalili Collection has at least a dozen. These coins form the basis
of a study which will dramatically change our ideas about the origin
of this coinage.
Also of special interest among the gold coins is a superb quality
dinar of the year AH 77, the first Arab gold coin with the words
of the Kalimah in its legend; an excessively rare Hijaz dinar of
the year AH 105, and the only known specimen in a private collection;
a superb and extremely rare Abbasid dinar of the year AH 132; two
issues of the dinar of Harun al-Rashid bearing his full title (years
AH 170 and 171); a unique dinar of the Ilkhanid Musa Khan; and a
5-piece Qajar treasury set of 50, 20 and 10 tomans.
The silver coinage is also extensive in its coverage, and contains
many unparalleled and important series. The bronze coins include
an impressive assemblage of fine examples, and particular emphasis
has been placed on the early Arab-Byzantine period and on the expressive
and attractive Artuqid coins of the Jazira and Eastern Anatolia.
