The Khalili Collection contains more than 300 objects that encapsulate
the history of Islamic glass from its Byzantine and Sasanian antecedents
to late 19th- and early 20th-century revivals.
It contains an unparalleled group of mould-blown and pattern-moulded
objects - no fewer than seven of which are of the rare inscriptional
type - and this wealth of material has allowed comparisons to be
made between vessels from the same moulds.
Other significant groups comprise vessels with relief, linear- and
facet-cut decoration, as well as vessels on which the decoration
is pincered; applied in the form of trails and medallions; cold-
or lustre-painted; and a group of enamelled objects spanning the
entire period when this technique was in fashion.
Glass with scratched decoration - a category known mostly through
small fragments - is represented here by four complete vessels,
and these form the basis of a major new study of the type.
ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Dr Sidney M. Goldstein is Associate Director, St Louis Art Museum,
and has written extensively on early glass.
Dr Jens Kröger is Curator, Museum für Islamische Kunst,
Berlin, and author of several works on glass, inlcuding a recent
publication on the glass from Nishapur.
Melanie Gibson is an Islamic art historian, London, with a special
interest in medieval Islamic glass.
Nahla Nassar is Acting Curator and Registrar of the Khalili Collection,
with special interest in metalwork and the arts of the Jazira.
Dr Avinoam Shalem is an Islamic art historian, and author of a study
on the survival of Islamic art in European treasuries.
