Joe Earle
The second major exhibition of the Khalili Collection of Japanese
Art to be shown outside the UK and the first on the West Coast of
the USA, was held at the Portland Art Museum in Oregon from 1 June
to 22 September in 2002.
Among those present at the opening of the exhibition were Governor
John Kitzhaber, Senator Gordon Smith, Mayor Vera Katz and the Consul
General of Japan. Some 125,000 people visited the exhibition.
This exhibition featured over 350 masterpieces from the brilliant
Meiji Period (1868 - 1912), during which Japanese craftsmanship
reached levels of perfection never equalled before or since. Drawn
from the largest and finest concentration of Meiji-Period art to
be found anywhere in the world, Splendors of Imperial Japan is rich
in masterpieces of metal, lacquer, enamel, ceramics, porcelain and
textiles.
The Portland Art Museum had recently celebrated 110 years as the
oldest and most comprehensive visual arts resource in the Pacific
Northwest, and is an essential part of the region's cultural and
economic fabric. It is dedicated to presenting the finest visual
art from local, regional, US, and international sources. The permanent
collections of the museum consists of over 32,000 pieces including
work in areas including Native American, American painting and sculpture,
regional Northwest, Asian, African, Pre-Columbian, European and
English silver.
A comprehensive 470-page catalogue written by Joe Earle was produced
for this exhibition.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Joe Earle is Chair of the Department of the Art of Asia, Oceania
& Africa, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Formerly Keeper of the Far
Eastern Department at the Victoria and Albert Museum, he has curated
many galleries and exhibitions of Japanese art and is the author
of numerous books on the subject.
